Natural Therapies
![]() Lavender grown for medicinal properties |
Natural Therapy is seen as form of alternative medicine in the western world, but it is a method that has been around since the dawn of time; and in third world countries it is a cost effective method of providing health care. It has a tremendous impact on this rural area with scant access to medical care. We have implemented a training programme for Community Health Workers and Traditional Birth Attendants in how to administer and apply plant extracts in this way. Our intentions are to carry on the teaching programme that we have already commenced in Aromatherapy for them, and supply the oils free of charge to them to treat their patients once they are fully assessed at being competent in the usage. With the land at Shamulumba, we plan to
plant chinchoma, (for Quinine to treat malaria),and moringa in addition
to
plants such as lavender, thyme, tea tree, geranium, aloe vera and
eucalyptus and lemon trees that can be produced into therapeutic
compounds and oils. Sunflowers and Soya beans can also be grown to
produce carrier oils. |

Burn Treated with aromatherapy and aloe vera
Faith's Foot 1 year on:
|
Three year old Faith suffered a burn on the top of her right foot from a charcoal iron. Although the injury had been cleaned with water, it quickly became infected probably due to the water not being sterile. In a developed country, she would have been administered a course of Antibiotics, however in Zambia, the cost of this made it prohibitive. Therefore, lavender water was initially applied as an anti septic and cleansing agent, Aloe Vera and finally lavender oil every couple of days until the healing was complete. The results are displayed in the photo above: Although the pigmentation of the skin is reduced, there is little scarring. |

Gash treated with Aromatherapy
|
This lady had a gash of about 3mm deep to her lower right leg. In a resource ridh country, it would have probably been sutured and a course of antibiotics administered. However, in Zambia, it was cleaned with lavender water as an anti septic and cleansing agent, and was dressed daily and lavender oil applied. The woman continued with Lavender based treatments at home. Within a couple of weeks the injury had remained free of infection and had knitted back together. |

LTF intends to use part of the land donated to us to grow plants that will supply essential oils. We aim to build a distillery and bottling plant which will bring employment to the area. We will continue to supply villagers with Natural Therapy treatments and educate the Traditional Birth Attendants and Community Health Workers on the safe use of Natural Therapy.
