Mobile Rural Health Clinics and Outreach

Mobile rural health clinics

Locals at a Mobile Rural Health Clinic

There are 36 villages covered by Nampundwe Clinic with a population of around 15,000, and with transport being a major problem for most people, a Mobile Clinic is desperately needed. Recently rural clinics have seen up to 56 people a day. Some of them walking for over 2 1/2 hours to gain help. The Community workers at these clinics use a mixture of western medicine such as painkillers, health and dietary advice to help the variety of problems people have.

Countless people out in the villages have physical problems due to bad diet and years of hard work.
Lack of education, alongside poverty and poor resources have perhaps the largest parts to play in this equation.

House and Clinic at Lisuku

At Lisuku a house and clinic has now been built for the use of the community at the rural village of Lisuku.

Current transport between villages

We would like to extend our support to other villages by providing a 4x4 vehicle, which can be utilised to transport urgent patients to Nampundwe clinic or hospital in Nangoma or Lusaka.

Endson

Current plans are to sponsor community health workers through nursing training this year and provide qualified nurses at rural locations identified as needy by Nampundwe's Environmental Health Officer.

Outreach

Child with Chicken Pox

Every month there are ‘outreach’ campaigns from Nampundwe to bring immunisations and health education to the outlying villages.

In July 2007, A measles campaign was ran and they managed to treat 2,688 children in one week!
This exceeded target by 148%.

With our support, they covered twelve villages and treated the children for Vitamin A deficiency and worms too.

At each village they provided a health education package and covered the topics of Pregnancy and Birth, Diarrhoea and Dehydration, Contraception, Hygiene, Sanitation, Fever, Care of the Sick and Tetanus.

As this is a useful tool to reach people with Health Education, we intend to maintain our connection with the monthly clinic and support their outreach as an ongoing commitment.
